The University of Vermont and State Agricultural College, commonly known as University of Vermont or simply UVM, is a national public research university in Burlington, which is the largest city in the state of Vermont, as well as the county seat of Chittenden County.
During the 2000 census, Burlington's population was estimated at a number of nearly 40 000 inhabitants, and it is known as having the smallest metropolitan area in the nation, as well as being the smallest US city to be the largest one in a state.
UVM was founded in 1791, as a private university, in the same year, when Vermont became the 14th state in the union. In 1865, the university was merged with Vermont Agricultural College, due to which fact, it later became known as the University of Vermont and State Agricultural College.
UVM has quickly grown over the years, serving today students from all over USA, as well as 30 other countries, offering them 7 undergraduate schools, a graduate college, an honor college, including a college of medicine, through which it grants various bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees.
There are 20 different sports offered in UVM's athletic program, including basketball, ice hockey, lacrosse, soccer, skiing, as well as many other sports. The Catamounts, by which name the athletic teams from UVM are known, have won 3 straight America East Academic Cups, in 2005, 2006 and 2007, making UVM the 1st school in the America East Conference to win 3 years in a row, including 4 times overall.
The ski team has won 6 national championships, including 31 EISA titles, as well as 52 individual national championships, 273 All-Americans and has had 66 US Ski Team Members. UVM has also experienced victory in other sports areas, such as hockey and basketball, and there have been 32 Catamount baseball players who have continued their careers in MLB programs, such as Kirk McCaskill, who won over 100 games during his Major League career.
